Lora Sandhusen: Time to change government policies — for the planet

Frances Crowe is such an inspiration. She has always tried to live lightly on the planet. Her personal actions have followed her convictions — and she urges others to use their own daily actions to combat climate change (“What we can do, today, about climate change,” April 26).

Personal actions are important. But let’s also realize that because of past government decisions, our transportation system is based on cars. Our energy system is a grid, based on fossil fuels — with a net-metering cap that limits solar energy production. Renewable energy innovation (and affordability) is discouraged by subsidies to the fossil fuel industry — and a free pass to pollute. It is an uphill climb to overcome these impediments, to live in our world while not contributing to climate change.

So we need to change these government policies. We must support and pass An Act to Promote Green Infrastructure and Reduce Carbon Emissions (the Benson Bill) in Massachusetts and the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act (HR 763) in the U.S. House. We are fortunate that all our local state legislators, and our U.S. Rep., Jim McGovern, have co-sponsored these bills. Let’s thank them at every opportunity, and ask for support from friends and family outside of western Massachusetts.

The Green New Deal is drawing attention to the need to act quickly and decisively. No one wants to harm our planet, if we can help it. Let’s get behind these bills and make it easier to turn our personal convictions into action.
