Daniel D. Rist: Easthampton councilor urges voters to reelect at-large incumbents

The city of Easthampton has a difficult choice this election in that there are five great candidates for four at-large council seats.

Because of their incredible work on the council, I must at this time endorse the reelection of three at-large councilors: Peg Conniff, Bill Lynch and Owen Zaret. The two other candidates are remarkable women with a lot to offer our city, but as difficult as this choice is, I must recognize the talent and experience of these three councilors.

Peg Conniff is running for her third term and she has demonstrated a gift being in touch with our community. Her work on the welcoming ordinance and the Roe Act resolution, as well as countless other measures before us is always well researched with very thoughtful in-depth analysis. Her work as our chair of appointments stands as the example going forward for how the council should review all appointments before us by making sure each is investigated and not simply rubber stamped.

Bill Lynch has served with me on the finance committee. He brings great business acumen to the committee and completely dissects each and every appropriation. Regardless of seemingly simple scope of any, he will analyze and question the need for any dollar spent. We are lucky to have someone like Bill watching over how our taxes are spent.

Finally, I can’t say enough about Owen Zaret’s incredible passion for our community and how he has broken records for the amount of legislative action he has either initiated or co-authored. His work includes resolutions against discrimination and ordinances for cannabis equity, fair wages and the safety of our rail trail just to mention a few of his most recent efforts. Owen is a tireless councilor of action and an example that we can’t simply sit back and react to legislation, but that we councilors have a duty to initiate action whenever it is needed.

Please vote to reelect Peg Conniff, Bill Lynch and Owen Zaret. We need their experience and talent in Easthampton.
