AMHERST — Exactly a month after a rental car parked at a College Street business was stolen, police in the Rocky Mountains recovered the vehicle.

Amherst police were contacted Thursday at 3:17 a.m. by police in Missoula, Montana, after a 39-year-old Springfield man turned himself in and informed the Montana police that he was done using the 2017 Hyundai Accent taken from Enterprise Rent a Car at 213 College St.

Amherst Detective Sgt. Brian Daly said the man will be summoned to court on charges of larceny of a motor vehicle, breaking into a depository and breaking and entering into a motor vehicle.

The man is alleged to have broken into a lock box at Enterprise in the early morning hours of Feb. 1. Inside the lock box, he found keys to vehicles in the lot and once he got a vehicle started, he returned the remaining keys to the lock box and drove the vehicle away, according to security footage viewed by police.

Management at the company did not notify Amherst police about the stolen vehicle until Feb. 7.
