EASTHAMPTON — If your car needs to be inspected or you need to renew your license by the end of March, you might want to get it done now.

All Registry of Motor Vehicles inspection and service locations are going to be closed from 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 22, until 8 a.m. on Monday, March 26, as the registry transitions to a new computer system, according to a statement from the state Department of Transportation.

Online services will also be unavailable, and AAA branch locations that offer RMV services to AAA members will be unable to do so.

Affected locations include the RMV office at 116 Pleasant St. in Easthampton, the AAA service center in Hadley and RMV locations in Greenfield and Chicopee.

Law enforcement officers will have access to backup data files for the duration of the update.

“The Registry’s new computer system will enable the Commonwealth to issue federally mandated REAL ID credentials to members of the public who will need a REAL ID credential,” the MassDOT statement says.  “REAL ID is a Federal Security Standard for IDs that was created in 2005 as a result of the increased federal security measures after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.”
