AMHERST — Both beaches at Puffer’s Pond have reopened for swimming two weeks after weekly water testing showed high levels of E. coli bacteria.

But the Wentworth Conservation Area on Stanley Street is closed to swimming again due to the detection of unacceptable levels of E. coli in the routine testing.

Signs at the conservation area warn people to stay out of the water.

The two sites had been closed to swimmers since July 20 following thunderstorms and heavy rains that swelled bodies of water and, in the case of Puffer’s Pond, turned the water muddy.

Last week, the State Street beach at Puffer’s Pond reopened while the beach on the opposite side, off Summer Street, remained closed.
