NORTHAMPTON — Thornes Marketplace has found a new tenant for the space left by the departing Cornucopia, who themselves have secured a new, larger space in the city of Holyoke.

A longtime institution inside of Thornes for more than 40 years, the health food store Cornucopia announced last month it would be leaving its location on the first floor of the downtown shopping center due to rising costs of operation. That left a prime space in the store vacant, just around the same time that Bruce McAmis and Benson Hyde, owners of wine-and-cheese store Provisions, were looking to relocate from their current location on Crafts Avenue not far from City Hall.

“They reached out to me and started a discussion,” said Jody Doele, one of the co-owners of Thornes. “It all came together rather quickly, which is unusual, but appreciated.”

In an interview with the Gazette, McAmis said the store had wanted to move to a location where they could garner more foot traffic while remaining around the city’s Main Street. They originally had reached out to Thornes to inquire about a different space, but agreed to move into the former Cornucopia spot after it became available.

“Philosophically, we’re committed to being a downtown business in Northampton,” McAmis said. “We’ve been downtown for almost 15 years, so we want to stay that way.”

Before it’s able to move, Provisions will need approval from the states’ Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission to transfer its license to the new location. The store plans to begin operations in the new space this fall.

In addition to its Crafts Avenue location, Provisions operates stores in North Amherst and Longmeadow. The Crafts Avenue location will remain open for the time being, and McAmis said customers should look to the store’s social media for updates on when it will move.

McAmis said some customers had expressed concern regarding accessibility for the new location, but that the store would be able to accommodate assistance for transporting larger orders.

“We’ve always helped people with heavy bags or boxes when they’ve asked for it, and we’re going to continue to do that,” McAmis said. “People aren’t going have to lug boxes all by themselves.”

Cornucopia’s new spot

As for Cornucopia owners Nate Clifford and Jade Jump, they’ve managed to secure a new location for themselves at 384 Dwight St. in downtown Holyoke. Located near the Holyoke Children’s Museum and the Fame Lounge, the new space will be roughly twice the size of its Thornes location, according to Jump.

“We’re really enthusiastic about it,” Jump said. “It’s a beautiful space, with lots of character.”

Like Provisions, Jump said that Cornucopia’s new space is expected to open to the public sometime in the fall. The store’s last day at Thornes before closing is June 30.
