CHICOPEE — The chicken sandwich at fast-food chain Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen has been selling out in locations across the country, and western Massachusetts is no exception.

The Popeyes on Memorial Drive was sold out of the sandwich Tuesday afternoon, with a number of signs advertising this fact.

The sandwich may come back this weekend depending on supplies, said Gisela Alfaro, who owns the Popeyes franchise in Chicopee.

Later Tuesday, the company announced that despite preparing substantial inventory for a strong launch of the new sandwich, which first went on sale Aug. 12, it expected all Popeyes outlets to be out of them as soon as Friday.

“Popeyes restaurants across the country are expected to sell out of the Chicken Sandwich by the end of the week,” company spokeswoman Brooke Scher Mogan said in a statement. Demand for the sandwich was spurred by a viral marketing campaign that included Twitter exchanges with rivals Chick-fil-A and Wendy’s.

As Popeyes said it was working to bring the sandwich back as soon as possible, at least one website was expressing some skepticism about the supposed sellout.

Popeyes, noted a story on the website Thrillist, provided no details about the supply problem: “How does a nationwide chicken chain run out of chicken?”

Further, the story noted, “It certainly doesn’t hurt the buzz around the sandwich for Popeyes to issue a press release stating that their product is just so damn popular, they can’t keep up with the overwhelming demand. ... We now breathlessly await word from Popeyes about the return of the glorious chicken sandwich.”

Alfaro also owns the franchise on Boston Road in Springfield, which is currently closed for construction. The next closest Popeyes is in Windsor Locks, Connecticut.
