NORTHAMPTON — Police spent Tuesday night searching for a missing person in and around the Mill River in Florence, including calling in a helicopter from the Massachusetts State Police.

Two police officers on scene in the parking lot of the Arts & Industries building at 221 Pine St., next to the Mill River, kept onlookers away from the river. An additional cruiser could be seen across the street where people swim in an area near a waterfall.

The river was running high from Tuesday’s heavy rains.

The helicopter circled over the river area for a while and then went elsewhere.

Officers declined to comment throughout the evening about the search, which began between 8 and 9 p.m.

At close to 11 p.m., officers were taking pictures of a white Toyota sedan with New York plates parked in the Arts & Industries parking lot.

Police said at 11:10 p.m. they would have no further information Tuesday night, and would be issuing a statement Wednesday morning.
