NORTHAMPTON — A man and a woman arrested outside the Northampton Courthouse Friday afternoon after being subdued by at least 10 court officers were identified by police as two homeless people, one of whom had left the courthouse without permission.

Police arrested Darnell Turner, 24, on charges of disorderly conduct (subsequent offense), resisting arrest and on a warrant, according to police. Police also arrested Brianna L. Johnson, 19, on charges of assault and battery on a public employee and disorderly conduct. Johnson is believed to be Turner’s girlfriend, police said.

Police said Turner had left the courthouse without permission and was asked to return. A court officer had observed Turner leave and told him that he was going to be detained and escorted back to the courthouse, according to police. Police said Turner then resisted the court officer and a struggle ensued. Johnson jumped on the back of one of court officers who was trying to help, according to police.

A Gazette reporter witnessed the scene on Gothic Street where at least five Northampton Police Officers, including a plain clothes officer, responded shortly after the pair had been subdued and handcuffed. Police put a spit mask on Turner before officers lifted him from the ground. A bloodied scrape on the man’s elbow could be seen, as well as on a court officer.
