PLAINFIELD – Plainfield’s annual town election on Saturday features races for the Board of Selectmen and tree warden.

In-person voting will take place from noon to 6 p.m. at Town Hall.

In the race for the Board of Selectmen, incumbent Hilary Weeks is being challenged by Benjamin Gillett. And for tree warden, incumbent Robert Mellstrom will face off against Claude Dupont, who has previously held the job.

Weeks, who chairs the board and was first elected to the board in 2017, said that she’s running for re-election “because my town needs me.”

She said that she’d had a desire to step down, but there are complicated issues going on in Plainfield and the other members of the board are newer than her. She also said she was encouraged by others in town to run again.

Weeks, who co-owns R & H Weeks Trucking with her husband Ronald Weeks, has lived in town since 2003.

Should she be re-elected, Weeks said she would be involved with the board’s plans to look into hiring a town administrator, as current town secretary and accountant Paula King is considering retirement. She also said she would continue to educate the public about the police department and plan ahead for the cost of new training requirements.

“It’s going to totally change how they can hire officers,” she said.

When asked why he is running, Gillett, 40, said he’s doing so in part because young people haven’t been stepping up to be part of town government.

“Young people have to do some of this stuff eventually,” he said.

Gillett, who has lived in town for 10 years, is the manager of Bacon’s Equipment in Williamsburg.

Should he be elected, Gillett said that he would “try to keep the town the way it is,” although he acknowledged that some things will change.

Other positions on the ballot are two seats on the Board of Assessors, a seat on the Board of Health, a library trustee position and town moderator.
