HOLYOKE — Police arrested a local man Tuesday after they discovered pipe bombs and bomb-making materials at his home at 91 Pleasant St.

Gregory Bennett, 29, was charged with four counts of possession of an explosive device.

Bennett was arraigned in Holyoke District Court Wednesday afternoon, but court officials declined to immediately release documents related to the charges.

Local, state and federal law enforcement officials surrounded the property on Tuesday, evacuating six nearby homes for hours as they closed off a section of Pleasant Street to search the site.

On scene were FBI agents with the agency’s Joint Terrorism Task Force as well as officers with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. State police, fire investigators with the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services and local police and first responders were also present.

Gary and Elizabeth Bennett are co-owners of the property at 91 Pleasant St., according to city property records.

In a statement Wednesday, Department of Fire Services spokeswoman Jennifer Mieth said that the State Police Bomb Squad disposed of the explosive devices.

“The State Police Bomb Squad rendered the items safe for evaluation and submitted evidence to the State Police Crime Lab,” Mieth said.
