A trio of Pioneer Valley Fencing Academy fencers went undefeated as a team during their last two competitions, where they faced off against nine other schools. The three fencers, junior captain Willa Barman, junior River Burnell-Wojtech and senior Klara Sokop, not only represent PVFA, but Northampton High School as well.
Barman, Burnell-Wojtech and Sokop make up the Blue Devils’ girls epee squad, and they face off against other schools during competition. Their previous pair of competitions consisted of Weston, Dana Hall, Boston University Academy, Concord-Carlisle, Beaver Country Day School, Needham, Bishop Feehan, Star Academy and Brooke. There are three people to a team, so with each squad fencing each other there are a total of nine bouts, and a team must pick up five wins in order to come out on top of the best five-out-of-nine format.
In the most recent competition, which took place at Beaver Country Day School in Chestnut Hill on Feb. 2, Barman, Burnell-Wojtech and Sokop defeated two schools 9-0 and 8-1, respectively.
The training done at PVFA has prepared each of them to excel in meets and competitions, and they’ve had a huge year for the Northampton High School fencing team.
