NORTHAMPTON — A physical therapist from South Hadley will be sentenced next week after a jury found him guilty of three counts of indecent assault and battery on a patient in his care.

According to the Northwestern district attorney’s office, a jury convicted Edward Kostek, 42, after a two-day trial in Northampton District Court; the verdict was delivered on Wednesday after two hours of deliberation.

The incidents took place on separate occasions in January 2019 when the victim was being treated for neck injuries at Cooley Dickinson Hospital Rehabilitation Services at 8 Atwood Drive.

“The victim in the case testified that during three of those sessions, Kostek inappropriately touched her in private areas of her body,” the district attorney’s office said in a statement.

The victim reported the assaults to Cooley Dickinson personnel and Northampton police, and Kostek was arraigned in July 2020.

Judge Jacklyn Connly is scheduled to sentence Kostek on Tuesday. Assistant district attorney Andrew Covington prosecuted the case.

“The defendant abused his position of trust and care. The survivor showed great strength in coming forward,” Covington said in a statement. “Victims of sexual assault are encouraged to report these crimes to their local police departments or the Northwestern district attorney’s office.”

Attorney Thomas Kokonowski, who represented Kostek, could not be reached for comment on Thursday.
