Photo gallery: The well-worn pew

  • Recently I was at First Church of Amherst covering an event where clergy had gathered to pray for Lucio Perez, an undocumented immigrant who had been living at the church in sanctuary for over a year. Before the event started, I noticed this one very worn seat in the first pew of the church. As I walked throughout the church I looked at each seat; no other was as worn. I kept coming back to it and eventually found myself taking pictures of it. As is often the case, the pictures came first and then my understanding of why I was drawn to it came later. That seat felt comforting to me. I have no idea who sits there, or what the story is, but the idea of that seat being used over and over in a place of prayer, a place where someone grieved, laughed, sang, struggled and felt comfort gave me pause. And so I do what I do: I tried to photograph what I felt.
