NORTHAMPTON – For one more week, the Daily Hampshire Gazette is accepting nominations for its annual Person of the Year award, as well as an inaugural Young Community Leader Award.

The awards will be presented to Hampshire County residents who go above and beyond in making the Valley a better place through community service. Young adults ages 15 to 30 who demonstrate exceptional community involvement and volunteerism are eligible for the new youth award.

For the third year, the Gazette has partnered with the United Way of Hampshire County to award cash prizes to extraordinary county residents. The Person of the Year will win $500, and the Young Community Leader will win $250. Half of both of these awards must be donated to a charity of the recipient’s choice.

Nominations will be accepted until Tuesday, Feb 28. The winners will be featured in the Gazette on March 7.

Winners will be chosen by a selection committee consisting of United Way and Gazette staff, community members and past honorees.

Laura Dintino, event marketing coordinator at the Gazette, said the winner should be someone who has not previously received much recognition for quietly going about the ways they care for and try to improve the quality of life in the community.

Past recipients include Jack Finn, founder of A2Z Science and Learning center in Northampton and Yvonne Freccero, former president of Friends of Hampshire County Homeless Individuals.

Nominations for the awards can be made online at, by mail using a nomination form published in the Gazette, or by email at
