WORTHINGTON — The Town Democratic Committee will host its first non-gubernatorial candidate in its Sundays With the Candidates series when it welcomes state Rep. Paul Mark, D-Peru, on Sunday, Jan. 23.

Mark is running for the Senate’s Berkshire, Hampden, Franklin and Hampshire District seat. The seat is currently held by state Sen. Adam Hinds, D-Pittsfield, who is running for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor.

“It’s certainly not a community I’m unfamiliar with,” Mark said.

Mark, who hails from the small Berkshire County town of Peru, noted that he’s frequently gone through Worthington while serving in his House district. He recalled working with Worthington’s former state representative Steve Kulik, noting that they were both the only members serving in the state Legislature from towns of less than 2,000 people.

“We were really close,” Mark said.

Kulik has endorsed Mark’s Senate bid, and Mark is currently running unopposed for the position.

The Jan. 23 session with Mark will take place over Zoom at 2 p.m. Those interested in attending should email Worthingtondem@gmail.com with their name and town.

As with all Sundays With the Candidates events, attendees will have the opportunity to ask Mark questions. For his part, Mark said events like this provide a good opportunity to hear if there’s something he’s not thinking about, and learn about a town’s local issues. He also said there are a lot of similarities between Worthington and communities he’s traditionally represented.

Previously, Sundays With the Candidates has hosted Democratic gubernatorial candidates Danielle Allen and Sonia-Chang Diaz. Ben Downing, who recently ended his campaign for governor, was also hosted by the program.

“We’ve had a really good reception,” said Ruth Lehrer, chairwoman of the Worthington Town Democratic Committee. “I think people are really excited to have this centered in Worthington.”

As for what’s next for the program, Lehrer said she’s working on a schedule for the lieutenant governor candidates.
