Describes Dan Carey’s dedication, selflessness

Dan Carey is running for the 2nd Hampshire District seat in the House of Representatives.

I could editorialize on the breadth and depth of his resume — from his work in the schools, including numerous school-related committees, to his two terms on the City Council, chairing public safety and sitting on finance subcommittees, to his philanthropic work fundraising scholarship money for the Saint Patrick’s Day committee, where he received an award for his service.

Perhaps I could expound on Carey’s administering the drug diversion and treatment program for the Northwestern district attorney’s office — while putting himself through law school, passing the bar, and becoming an assistant district attorney.

All of that can be easily sourced, but what is important to me is the person that Carey is. He is a mensch. A mensch is a Yiddish superlative indicating someone of noble character, a person of good deeds and someone to emulate.

In my year getting to know Carey, first as we both campaigned for a seat on the City Council, to working together on the City Council, and to working on Easthampton’s school ballot committee, I have seen nothing but steadfast commitment to his work.

His work is done in earnest, with a kind and collaborative spirit. Despite Carey’s myriad accomplishments and awards, he neither takes, nor seeks, one iota of credit.

He does not grandstand or boast. Carey simply rolls up his sleeves and does the work.

He is a person who is most likely to lift other people up, rather than highlighting himself. Time and time again, where most people would say “Look what I have done,” Dan says, “What more can I do?”

He does it all with a smile, little rest and ongoing tenacity. It is this spirit of dedication and selflessness that makes Dan Carey the candidate we need to fight for the 2nd Hampshire District in the Statehouse, and why I am so proud to support him.
