AMHERST — Opportunities abound Thanksgiving week in Amherst for people to be both fed and be in the company of others as the holiday season begins.

The Amherst Survival Center holds its annual Thanksgiving community meal at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 867 North Pleasant St., Wednesday from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Between 150 and 250 people from Amherst and surrounding communities are expected to partake in the meal, which will include food and drinks and live music.

Mindy Domb, executive director of the survival center, said volunteers create the dishes, cook the turkeys and do clean up once everyone has eaten. The food is donated by businesses, schools, religious groups and families.

“Community participation and volunteer help are what makes this meal special,” Domb said.

On Thanksgiving, the Not Bread Alone soup kitchen, a program of the Center for Human Development, will have a meal starting at 1 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 165 Main St.

Bob Stover, the program coordinator, said guests are welcome to come early for coffee and socialization before the meal is served.

At the nearby Bangs Community Center, on Boltwood Walk, Amherst Senior Center volunteers will put on the 44th Thanksgiving Day dinner at 2 p.m.

The meal is for people 55 and older who are alone or unable to make their own meal. Home deliveries can also be arranged, which will begin arriving at people’s homes at noon.

People interested in coming to the meal, getting a delivery or volunteering can call Senior Center Director Nancy Pagano at 259-3114.

In addition, up to 800 families in the area are benefiting from the food pantry at the survival center, which is providing what it calls a “Thanksgiving Boost” that includes food for the holidays, like stuffing, cranberry sauce and pie filling, frozen turkeys and hams and gift cards.
