NORTHAMPTON — Police are investigating an incident in which a city man was arrested Thursday night after he allegedly smashed a window at Meadowbrook Apartments and entered an apartment.

Thomas F. Bridges, 31, was charged with breaking and entering into a building during the nighttime for a felony and wanton destruction of property over $1,200, according to the Northampton Police Department.

Police Detective Lt. Craig Kirouac said officers responded to Meadowbrook Apartments at 491 Bridge Road at 10:59 p.m. for a report of glass breaking and banging. When officers arrived, they discovered a broken first-floor window with glass inside the apartment and blood on the window and inside a room.

Police entered the apartment and announced their presence but no one was inside, Kirouac said. Another officer responding to the scene came across a man walking from the area with bloody hands, he said.

The man, later identified as Bridges, did not say much to police, Kirouac said, and a bloody folding knife was allegedly found in Bridges’ pocket. A witness identified Bridges as a person who they allegedly saw at the scene, Kirouac said.

People’s belongings were inside the apartment, but it is currently unknown whether anything was stolen, according to Kirouac. The incident remains under investigation.
