NORTHAMPTON — Karen Skolfield has been named the city’s ninth poet laureate, the Northampton Arts Council said Wednesday.

Skolfield will serve as poet laureate for two years, ending in 2021. She “will celebrate Northampton’s vibrant and diverse poetry community through activities of interest to the chosen poet, and will educate the public about the importance of poets and poetry to Northampton’s civic and artistic life,” the arts council said in a press release.

A U.S. Army veteran and writing teacher at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Skofield’s upcoming book “Battle Dress” won the Barnard Women Poets Prize. She is the winner of the 2014 PEN New England Award in poetry for her book “Frost in the Low Areas,” and of the 2016 Jeffrey E. Smith Editors’ Prize in poetry from The Missouri Review.
