NORTHAMPTON — A man with ties to Northampton placed on the state’s most wanted list last month was captured in New Jersey on Thursday, state police announced.

Stephen C. Cote, 47, was wanted on a charge in U.S. District Court of receipt of material involving the sexual exploitation of minors, according to state police. Although a warrant for Cote’s arrest was issued in November 2015, he fled and has been wanted by state police and Northampton Police since that time.

Cote was added to the Massachusetts State Police Most Wanted Fugitives list on June 25.

Police said Cote was arrested outside an apartment complex in Lakewood, New Jersey, as he exited a motor vehicle in the parking lot Thursday afternoon.

Police said the arrest stemmed from information the Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section and the U.S. marshals in Springfield developed about Cote’s location and the vehicle he might be driving. This information was forwarded to the N.Y./N.J. Regional Fugitive Task Force.

After several hours of surveillance outside the apartment complex, task force members, who were working with U.S. marshals and officers from the New Jersey State Police and New Jersey Department of Criminal Justice, watched Cote drive into the parking lot in the suspected vehicle. He was arrested after he parked and exited the vehicle, state police said.

Cote will be held until he is arraigned in federal court.
