NORTHAMPTON — A city man was arrested Friday after police were called to Veterans’ Field for a report of gunshots.

Northampton police responded to the skate park at Veterans’ Field at 4:05 p.m. Friday for a report of “multiple gunshots fired,” according to a post written by Police Chief Jody Kasper on the department’s Facebook page.

An initial investigation determined that a man had gotten into a verbal altercation with another person, fired a weapon and fled the area, Kasper wrote; no one was shot. All six on-duty Northampton officers, as well as officers from the Easthampton Police Department and Massachusetts State Police, assisted in a search of the area.

“The 37-year-old male from Northampton was ultimately located and was arrested at 7:54 pm,” Kasper wrote.

Reached Saturday morning, Northampton police declined to provide additional information about the incident, including what the man arrested was charged with.

Police are still investigating the incident, Kasper wrote.
