High schools: Northampton boys basketball closes senior night with rally

Northampton started its five seniors, and the Blue Devils ended with a flurry.

Jake Brittain, Treyvon James-Salus, Daniel Lanier, Antoine Watts and Gavin Bullock entered Wednesday’s boys basketball game against Holyoke trailing by six in the last five minutes. They keyed a comeback, and Northampton closed its season with a 73-70 victory over Holyoke at home.

“It’s bittersweet because we’d rather be the team that wins in the end, but not many teams get to end their season with a victory,” Northampton coach Rey Harp said. James-Salus led the Blue Devils (6-14, 3-7 Valley) with 16 points, while Brittain had 13 and Set Finnessey had 12.

Lanier (nine points) and Watts (eight points) each notched career-highs and powered the Blue Devils’ 11-2 run to end the game.

Brian Cristobal scored 23 points to lead Holyoke (11-9, 5-5). William Cruz and Jael Cabrera each had 13 points.

Central 66, Amherst Regional 39 — Tabor Bowman scored eight points, as the Hurricanes fell at home. Isa Mahal Castro McCauley added seven points for Amherst (8-12, 4-6 Valley).

Hampshire Regional 81, Smith Vocational 53 — Justin Forest led the Raiders with 25 points, his 12th game of 20 or more this season, in a win Tuesday. Dominik Lewinski scored 18 points for Hampshire (9-11), while Colin Boyle had 11. Gabe Zink had 18 points for the Vikings (9-11). Jaxson Venne added 10 points. Andrew Pierce grabbed 12 rebounds and added seven points.

Girls basketball

McCann Tech 44, Smith Vocational 18 — Abby McDonald had six points on two 3s for the Vikings (6-13). Ella Sherman added five points.

Quabbin 48, Belchertown 38 — Gina Camerota had 11 points, as the Orioles ended the season with a road loss. Avery LaFlamme added eight points, and Olivia Vogel had five for Belchertown (4-16).

Hockey

Mount Everett 2, Easthampton 0 — Jayden Darling stopped 32 shots, but the Eagles (3-13-1) couldn’t generate any scoring in their season finale.

Whitman-Hanson 4, Greenfield 1 — Sean O’Sullivan scored an unassisted goal in the first period, but the Green Wave (17-3) couldn’t muster anymore offense on the road. Riley Drew had 38 saves.

Amherst Regional 4, Chicopee Comp 1 — Brandon Peritz scored two goals, while Chris Foster had a goal and an assist, as the Hurricanes closed the regular season with a victory.

Gunyoung Choi found the net, while Carter Beckwith had an assist for Amherst (13-4-3).

South Hadley 4, Southwick 1 — Anythony Cigal saved 25 shots on goal to lift the Tigers (11-7-2). Ryan Tucker, Joe Cigal, Matt Brunelle (assist) and Mike Mazza (assist) found the net. Aiden Sullivan, Thenis Tsilibocos and Cole Hambley each had one assist for South Hadley.

Belchertown 2, Drury 2 — Ryan O’Neil and Christopher Buffone each found the net on the road. Cody Samson, Glenn Scott and Colby Masse each added an assist for the Orioles (7-8-3).

Easthampton 8, Drury 0 —Jayden Darling made 21 saves in his first shutout of the year Monday. Ryan O’Connor contributed three goals and two assists for the Eagles (4-12-1, 3-5-1 Wright). Garren Fugiel had two goals and added on two assists. Jake Delisle, Tyler Galpin and Matt Sullivan scored one goal each. Ethan Marowitz and Jack Belcher-Timme had two assists, while Pete Sullivan, Matt Sullivan, Liam Reynolds and Owen Duda each added one.
