Post 81 shuts out Post 28 in American Legion regular season finale

Greenfield Post 81’s Joel Peabody threw a six-hit shutout, and his batters delivered a clutch third inning in a 3-0 win over Northampton Post 28 on Saturday in Greenfield.

He struck out eight and walked none.

Three of Greenfield’s four hits came in the third inning. Sam Bobala tripled, Garrett Deforest doubled and Michael Bassett singled to deliver Post 81 (12-4) its runs.

Noah Brink was 2-for-3 for Post 28 (11-5). Jackson Heath, Nate Kelley and Andry Grygorcewicz singled.

Saturday’s game concluded the regular season for both teams. By winning, Greenfield earned the No. 2 in the Western Massachusetts American Legion playoffs and will open the double-elimination tournament against No. 7 Wilbraham Blue. Post 81 Northampton fell out of the top two in Zone 1/2 by losing but earned a wild card spot. Post 28 is the No. 4 seed and will play No. 5 Agawam Post 185 in the opening round. Tournament games will begin Tuesday or Wednesday, and all games are in Wilbraham at Spec Pond.

Frontier 9, Amherst 8 — Kyle Barnes was 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI in a home win Sunday.

Frontier trailed 7-4 in the third inning but tied the game with three in the fifth. The club pushed the go-ahead run across in the sixth.

Kevin Baumann had two hits and an RBI. while Gehrig Brynda (two RBIs) and Ben Zaranek (RBI) and Ben Martino singled.

Sandy Koufax

Amherst 15, Mohawk 6 — Amherst scored seven runs in the sixth inning to break things open Saturday.
