WILBRAHAM — Nate Kelley’s RBI single in the eighth inning scored Noah Brink with the winning run as Northampton Post 28 beat top-seeded Pittsfield Post 68, 2-1, to stay undefeated in the double elimination American Legion playoffs, Friday night at Spec Pond.

“I can’t remember a game where we had so many base runners and so few runs,” Northampton coach Chuck Holt said. “It wasn’t that we were necessarily failing in the clutch, their pitcher just kept making really great pitches.”

Northampton took a 1-0 lead in the second when Brink scored following an error by the right fielder on a ball hit by Andy Grygorcewicz.

“I was just thinking about the last time we played them when we beat them,” Grygorcewicz said. “Focus on hitting and throwing strikes. Our pitchers so far in the playoffs have done a phenomenal job.”

Will Shaw pitched 6⅓ innings for Northampton and struck out seven. He was relieved by Mike Baldwin, who closed the game out and picked up the win.

“Well, I was kind of nervous pitching after Jake (Brittain’s) no-hitter,” Shaw said. “That’s kind of a lot to live up to. But I just wanted to throw it as hard as I could in the strike zone.”

Pittsfield tied the game in the sixth inning with a run on two hits and an error. Post 68 loaded the bases in the eighth on three hits, but Baldwin induced a flyball to right to end the game.

Grygorcewicz stole three bases. Kelley was 2-for-4, while Brink was 2-for-2.

Northampton will play Wilbraham Post 286 Red at 7 p.m. Saturday at Spec Pond.
