NORTHAMPTON — As election day approaches on Nov. 5, city residents have an opportunity on Tuesday to hear directly from candidates competing for a handful of contested seats on the City Council and School Committee.

The Gazette, in partnership with the League of Women Voters of Northampton Area and Northampton Community Television, is sponsoring a candidates forum at JFK Middle School on Tuesday, Oct. 22 from 7 to 9 p.m.

During the first hour, attendees will hear from five candidates competing for School Committee seats: Howard T. Moore and Emily Serafy-Cox, who are running for the Ward 3 seat, as well as Susan Voss, Roni Gold and Katherine Cardoso, who are vying for two at-large seats.

After the School Committee forum, candidates for City Council will take the stage from 8 to 9 p.m. Those participating are: Ward 1 candidates Andrew Smith and Michael Quinlan Jr., Ward 5 candidates David Murphy and Alexander Jarrett, and Ward 7 candidates Penny Geis and Rachel Maiore.

For both hours, the panel moderator will be Ingrid Flory, a member of the League of Women Voters of Northampton Area. Flory will be joined by fellow League of Women Voters member Jean Cherdack and Gazette reporter Greta Jochem.

The event is free and open to the public. It will take place in the community room at JFK Middle School.
