EASTHAMPTON — If his hiring is signed off on by the City Council, Christopher Norris will become the city’s new fire chief.

“I think it’s a great opportunity and I’m very excited,” Norris said.

Norris, a former Westhampton fire chief, currently serves as the senior deputy chief in the Northampton Fire Department. He has been in the fire service since 1994, starting in Westhampton as a volunteer firefighter.

Norris, along with an internal candidate, was one of two finalists in the search to replace Easthampton Fire Chief David Mottor. While Mottor’s last day as chief was June 30, he spent much of the month of June on vacation.

While the internal candidate was offered the job first, Mayor Nicole LaChapelle said that an agreement ultimately could not be reached with that person. It was then that the job was offered to Norris.

“Chief Mottor has a great legacy in the fire service,” Norris said. “I’m hoping I can continue to build upon his legacy.”

LaChapelle said Norris’ combination of hands-on experience and education qualified him for the position.

“He really understands EMS and those systems,” said the mayor.

The bulk of the fire department’s calls are for emergency medical services.

One of the reasons Norris applied for the position, he said, is that the department offers department-based EMS transport at the paramedic level.

“Easthampton has a great history and reputation out there in the region as being a high-performing department,” he said.

Although Norris lives in Westhampton, it’s just a 10-minute drive to the Easthampton public safety complex, he said.

The City Council has referred Norris’ hiring to its Appointments Committee.

City Council President Peg Conniff said the council could sign off on the hiring at its July 15 meeting.

LaChapelle expressed the hope that Norris could start the fire chief’s job in mid-August.

“I can’t wait to start working … with all the personnel at Easthampton fire,” Norris said.
