NORTHAMPTON — Starting later this month, Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School is set to launch its first slate of new adult education classes, including beer brewing, bicycle repair and manufacturing production technician training.

The school released a course catalog and opened registration for spring classes last week, detailed on a new website:

“Advance your career in cosmetology, culinary, electrical, health, manufacturing, plumbing and sustainability professions,” the website advertises. “Or take a class just for fun.”

Among the courses being offered is a free 10-week manufacturing production technician training program, sponsored by Springfield Technical Community College. Students who qualify for the program based on a series of assessments will receive 158 hours of instruction in machining, workplace math and the production process, among other things.  The school is hosting an information session about the course at 6 p.m. Thursday.

On Monday evenings starting April 25, the school is offering a four-week bicycle repair class for $160. It will be taught by Jason Graves, who owns Full Circle Bike Shop in Florence.

On Tuesdays starting April 26, there is a six-week beginning beer brewing course that will cost $250. Joe Eckerle, head brewer at Brew Practitioners Brewery and Taproom in Florence, will teach the class, which covers everything from preparation to bottling.

The school is also offering a six-part “homeowner survival” course, which will focus on basic plumbing repairs such as fixing leaky faucets and garbage disposals. The class, which will be taught by Smith Vocational plumbing instructor Armand Lamour, costs $290.

Those interested in cooperative businesses can also register for a two-hour introductory class being taught by Dorian Gregory, certified public accountant and loan officer for the Cooperative Fund of New England and a member-owner and board president of River Valley Co-op. The $25 class is scheduled for May 9.
