LEEDS – On New Year’s Day, 2020, a local charitable organization will lead winter adventurers in their second annual Polar Plunge on Musante Beach in Leeds. Swimmers will dip into the icy water to kick off the new year with a jolt.

The Northampton branch of the American Friends of the Palestinian House of Friendship started the tradition just last year. 100% of donations collected at the event will be given to The Palestinian House of Friendship, a summer camp in Palestine that serves up to 800 boys and girl, according to their website. Swimmers are encouraged to donate and gather as many sponsors as possible.

“It’s great and meaningful and significant,” long time group member Katherine Baker said.

“As long as you don’t have a heart attack!” Baker’s husband Peter Titelman added.

Hot chocolate and tents to change into warm clothes will be on hand, but the group still recommends that participants bring blankets just in case. The group will have a team on site to break any ice so swimmers can jump right in.

Last year, 12 swimmers and their sponsors raised almost $1,500. The group is aiming for $5,000 for the camp. Baker said she hopes to see 50 swimmers this time around. The countdown will start at noon.
