HATFIELD — An 18-year-member of the Hatfield School Committee is returning to the panel.

At Wednesday’s joint meeting of the four remaining School Committee members, and the three members of the Select Board, Catherine Englehardt earned five of the seven votes, with the other two votes going to Amanda Thayer.

Thayer and Englehardt, who both ran as write-in candidates at the town’s May 18 town election, each received 140 votes, but they trailed Jennifer Maloney, whose name was on the ballot and earned 236 votes to win the other vacant position.

Englehardt’s three children all went through Hatfield schools and two grandchildren she is raising are Hatfield Elementary School students.

All three Select Board members and School Committee members Maloney and Danielle Stanisewski voted for Englehardt, while interim School Committee Chairwoman Rebecca Bench and member Christy Boudreau voted for Thayer.

Prior to the vote, candidates were asked about resolving divisions in town, including ones surrounding education and the schools, where a search for a new superintendent is getting underway. Martin McEvoy announced he would be leaving the position after one year.

Englehardt said the past year took a toll on everyone and her responsibility as a committee member will be to represent all residents. Thayer said she would listen to all perspectives had she been named to the committee.
