NORTHAMPTON — For the second time in three years, the Gazette has been recognized in a regional competition for New England newspapers.

The New England Newspaper and Press Association (NENPA), as part of an annual awards program it conducts, has named the Gazette a “Distinguished Newspaper” for 2022 for daily newspapers with a circulation between 10,000 and 20,000.

The Gazette was one of four newspapers in that category that was considered for the top award, New England Newspaper of the Year, which this year went to the Record-Journal of Meriden, Connecticut.

Dan Crowley, the Gazette’s executive editor, noted that the NENPA competition, known as the New England Newspaper Awards, relies on panels of readers, not newspaper professionals, to make these assessments.

“It’s always nice to receive an honor that is decided upon by a jury of readers,” Crowley said. “And for the Gazette to be recognized twice in the last three years speaks to the hard work of our news team and everyone across the newspaper.”

Those juries, NENPA says, are asked to consider a range of factors in evaluating newspapers, including the quality of reporting and writing, the quality of photographs, digital offerings and overall design.

Just as important, the organization says, is how a newspaper responds to its readership, marked by questions such as “Does it reflect and care about the community it serves?” and “Does it put the interests of its readers first?”

The Gazette was recognized in 2020 as a “Distinguished Newspaper,” and NENPA also gave the paper two “Publick Occurrences” awards that year for two separate series of in-depth articles.

“Nowhere in America do newspapers have a history like they do here in New England,” Gazette Publisher Shawn Palmer said. “To be recognized as distinguished among our peers is truly an honor for the Gazette and our team of employees.”

NENPA makes its annual newspaper awards in eight different categories, including circulation size, daily versus weekly papers, and for newspapers that have a Sunday edition, unlike the Gazette.

This year the Republican of Springfield won the top award for Sunday papers with a circulation above 25,000, while the Berkshire Eagle was named Newspaper of the Year for Sunday papers with a circulation below 25,000.
