Skiing: Mohawk Trail defeats Amherst in Nordic relay event

The Mohawk Trail and Amherst Nordic ski teams competed in a relay-style race Wednesday, with each relay squad consisting of two boys and two girls, each skiing a 1-mile loop.

The Warrior teams took first and second place, with Amherst settling for third and fourth.

Mohawk Trail’s first team consisted of Dennis Simmons, Sylvie Mahon-Moore, West Williams and Katarzyna Wisnauckas, taking first with a time of 19 minutes, 45 seconds. The Warriors’ second team of Vincent Gauthier, Kala Garrido, Augustus Niswonger and Eleanor Meunier took second with a time of 21:21.

In third place was Amherst’s team of Ryan Yanko, Zoey Candito, Owen Candito and Maddy Parker with a time of 21:37. The Hurricanes’ second team of Max Rogoski, Ava Zimmerman, Kyle Yanko and Grace Wilkinson took fourth with a time of 22:00.

Alpine skiing

Williston Northampton’s Lily Shields placed second in the second Mount Institute Ski League Race at Berkshire East. She completed her first slalom run in 35.74 seconds and the second in 36.6 for a combined time of 72.15. Deerfield Academy’s Claire Patton took first (72.15).

Rosie Crooker was fifth (79.19) for the Wildcats.

Williston placed third overall in the girls standings with 99 points. Northfield Mount Hermon took first (145).

In the boys slalom, Deerfield Academy swept the top four spots and won the team race with 227 points. Williston was fifth (76).

Matthew Shields placed 10th for the Wildcats (75.82).
