A cold, blustery Saturday in January?

Nordic ski season officially arrived.

Things may have looked a bit different for the local Nordic ski programs over the weekend, but the competition was once again tight between host Mohawk Trail Regional and visiting Amherst Regional in a head-to-head dual meet in Buckland. Instead of the normal 8-10 schools in attendance, and with Berkshire County schools competing in their own bubble this winter, Mohawk Trail, which co-ops with Hampshire Regional, and Amherst were the lone squads competing during the season-opening meet.

In lieu of wave starts, competitions were spaced out in 15-second intervals to align with COVID-19 protocols.

On the girls side, Mohawk Trail’s Katarzyna Wisnauckas, who attends Hampshire, led the way with a winning time of 10 minutes, 48 seconds on the 2.2-mile course. The Warriors swept the first six spots to capture the team score via a 10-34 margin.

Sylvie Mahon-Moore (Hampshire) finished second with a time of 11:33, while teammates Ellie Meunier and Kala Garrido, who both also attend Hampshire, tied for third place in 12:50. Mohawk Trail’s Brooke Looman (fifth, 14:02) and Alex Lilly (sixth, 14:39) rounded out the scorers for the hosts.

For Amherst, Maddie Parker paced the Hurricanes with a seventh-place showing in 14:40. Rebecca Marshall took eighth overall in 14:55, followed by teammates Amrita Rutter (ninth, 15:43), Sophia Page (10th, 15:56), Ava Zimmermann (11th, 16:17) and Zoey Candito (12th, 16:30).

The Amherst boys team squeaked out an 18-22 team victory thanks to a performance that highlighted its depth.

Mohawk Trail’s West Williams (Hampshire) and Dennis Simmons tied for first place in 11:28 for the hosts, but the Hurricanes came through with the next six finishers to score the team win. Taylor Hanson was third for Amherst (11:39), followed by teammates Kyle Yanko (fourth, 11:41), Ryan Yanko (fifth, 12:03), Max Rogowski (sixth, 12:12), David Pinero-Jacome (seventh, 12:56) and Owen Candito (eighth, 13:19).

Mohawk Trail’s Daniel Tetreault (ninth) and Augustus Niswonger (Hampshire, 10th) rounded out the scoring for the Warriors.

The next race between the teams is scheduled for next Saturday at a location to be determined.
