Mitch Sieser: Vicious smear campaign against Russian government

Smear campaign against Russian government

The election year debasement of the political process extends into the holiday season with a vicious smear campaign waged against the Russian government and anyone else accused of displaying insufficient hostility toward that government.

The Obama administration claims, without providing a shred of corroborating evidence, that Russian hackers helped WikiLeaks tilt the election in Trump’s favor. The veracity of the accusations are supposedly confirmed by the investigations of the CIA – an agency known to lie about the magnitude of its own spy-surveillance operations.

Even if these accusations were proven to be true, they would still need to be seen in the historical context of U.S. covert interventions that have involved undermined elections and engineered coups since the end of World War II. An incomplete hit-list would include Italy (1948), Iran (1953), Guatemala (1954), Chile (1973), Australia (1975), Indonesia (1975), Honduras (2009) and the Ukraine (2014).

When White House spokesman Josh Earnest declared that the media outlets that had reported the content of the leaked DNC/Clinton emails “essentially became the arms of Russian intelligence,” the whipped up hysteria took on the ugly aspects of a McCarthyite witch-hunt.

Hillary Clinton, in the same vile spirit, called the alleged hacking “an attack against our country.” Her own regard for the sanctity of free elections was expressed in a leaked taped interview in which the then-secretary of state discussed a 2006 Palestinian election won by Hamas in terms of how the unpleasant (for the U.S.) results could have been averted if the election had been fixed: “If we were going to push for an election, then we should have made sure that we did something to determine who was going to win.”

The president-elect’s bombastic, confrontational approach toward China is offset by vague indications of a less hawkish stance taken with Russia. This draws the attacks of Democrats who accuse him of being a pawn in Putin’s subversive game.

Even the most innocuous hints of divergence from enforced anti-Russia warmongering are demonized by the political representatives of a rabid military-intelligence establishment that has recently suffered a devastating reversal of fortunes in Syria. The Russian forces that helped to defeat the U.S.-backed Islamist (Al-Qaeda-affiliated) militias occupying eastern Aleppo, have also delivered a humiliating blow to Obama’s failed policies in that region.

In the bitter aftershock of this significant setback, it is more than obvious that his insistence on the need for retaliatory measures against Russia, has little to do with the preserved “integrity” of corporate-dominated presidential elections.
