Amy Meltzer: Who is in charge of enforcement?

Each time I have gone to Stop & Shop in Northampton since the city’s guidelines for supermarkets were issued, there have been multiple examples of non-compliance. When brought to the attention of employees, the reply has been “well, we can’t do that.”

In each case, I have brought this matter to the attention of a manger, and several times, tried to bring it to the attention of the Board of Health. However, nothing changes at the store, and I have never received any reply from the Board of Health.

Who is making sure that businesses are in compliance? What protocols are there to alert the public about complaints and failures to comply? Whenever possible, I avoid stores that I know are lax about safety, but without accountability and transparency, it’s impossible to be an informed consumer.
