After a runner-up finish at the Massachusetts Amateur Public Links Championship last week in South Hadley, Michael Murray continued his strong run of play on Monday.

The Belchertown High School student who plays out of Westover Golf Course shot an even-par 70 in the opening round of the 106th Massachusetts Junior Amateur Championship at Bass River Golf Course in South Yarmouth. That was good enough for a tie for 22nd place in the 120-player field following Round 1.

Murray’s day featured three birdies and three bogeys. CJ Winchenbaugh of Oyster Harbors Club was the first round leader after a 7-under 63. Carson Erick of Boston Golf Club was second with a 6-under 64.

Murray will tee off at 1:50 p.m. on Tuesday for his second round of stroke play. The field will be cut to the low 16 players after Tuesday’s round, and a 16-player match play bracket will commence beginning Wednesday.
