AMHERST — A man who allegedly broke into a downtown apartment and then reportedly assaulted a police dog by barking at it was arrested early Sunday morning, according to Amherst police.
Patrick C. Kelly, 21, of Weymouth, was arrested at 1:02 a.m. on North Pleasant Street on charges of breaking and entering to commit a misdemeanor, vandalizing property, disorderly conduct, assault and battery on a police officer, and mistreating or interfering with a police dog, police said.
Police were initially called by a resident at North Pleasant Street apartment where Kelly had allegedly damaged the door to gain entry before fleeing.
When he was observed walking on the street and identified as the suspect, Kelly allegedly barked at K-9 Marvin in an attempt to agitate the dog, according to police.
