Police arrest Conn. man in swamp after I-91 crash

NORTHAMPTON – A Connecticut man was arrested near a potato field Tuesday night after allegedly fleeing the scene of a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 91.

According to police, Massachusetts State Police responded to the crash in the northbound lanes near Exit 18 at around 10:45 p.m.

State Police said that Tony Byars, 57, of Suffield, Connecticut, is alleged to have fled the scene of the crash on foot. Northampton Police said they were called in to assist at 11:02 p.m.

Northampton Police said they located Byars in the vicinity of a potato field off Atwood Drive near the highway.  

According to a post on the department’s Facebook page, the man was found lying in a swamp as police searched a wooded area.

Byars was subsequently taken into custody and turned over to the State Police. He was charged with unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle with a revoked registration, leaving the scene of a property damage accident and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

Police said that the other car involved in the crash was driven away from the scene by its driver who was uninjured. Police also said Byars did not require medical attention.
