NORTHAMPTON – A Holyoke man who is alleged to have tried to carjack an Uber vehicle ended his night in the custody of Northampton police Sunday night.

According to police, Matthew Cronin, 32, was in an Uber when the Uber’s driver became concerned that Cronin would vomit.

The driver then stopped the car and Cronin allegedly became upset and tried to take the driver’s keys from him and force the driver from the vehicle, though without success, according to police.

The driver then called the police, who responded to the area of Bridge Street and Hubbard Avenue at around 10:30 p.m. They located Cronin in the area shortly after and arrested him on one charge of carjacking and one charge of assault and battery.

Cronin was arraigned and pleaded not guilty to the charges in Northampton District Court on Monday and was released on his own recognizance. He is scheduled for a pretrial hearing on Jan. 17.
