Climate-change activist backs Comerford, Sabadosa

I am a teen who is deeply concerned about climate change. I testified last fall at the Statehouse on the need for stronger renewable energy policy, and am mentored by a mother who works very hard to help pass clean energy policy in Massachusetts.

I have seen her grow angry and despondent in recent weeks over the state Legislature’s practice of dealing behind closed doors while in conference committee and pulling stunts like the last-minute insertion of waste incineration — an energy source that creates more carbon pollution than coal — into already weak clean energy legislation.

I wonder whose interests those legislators are serving when they bargain away our clean air behind the shadows. Industry lobbyists move them more than the testimony of young people. I won’t be a kid much longer. I can’t vote this fall, but my time will come, and you can bet I will be a fierce political participant.

Until then, I urge everyone who can vote to elect the candidates who have the will and skills to challenge the lack of transparent democracy and the influence of money at the Statehouse. In my district, those strong and fearless candidates are Jo Comerford (write-in candidate for Senate in the Hampshire, Franklin and Worcester District) and Lindsay Sabadosa (candidate for House of Representatives in the 1st Hampshire District).

Consider the big picture — our functioning democracy, and our livable planet. Vote for Comerford and Sabadosa on Sept. 4.
