The MIAA Tournament Management Committee met virtually on Monday to review statewide alignments that will take effect in the fall of 2021.

The committee spent most of the three hours discussing football and boys ice hockey, two sports that are vastly different from other team sports.

The TMC voted to approve the number of divisions for football and boys ice hockey, but rejected the proposed alignments for both sports.

The TMC voted 11-5-1 to approve the eight-division alignment proposed by the football committee and voted unanimously to approve an eight-week regular season followed by 16-team playoff brackets.

The TMC, however, voted down (5-11-1) the recommended alignments put forward by the football committee. The TMC then unanimously voted to work with the football committee on alignments.

For boys hockey, the TMC voted 15-0-1 to approve the four-division proposal. The committee rejected the alignments by a 6-9-1 vote. The TMC then voted 15-0-1 to work with the football committee on alignments.

The TMC charged sport committees with aligning teams based on enrollment then adjusting the placement based on specific factors (private schools, co-ops, vocationals) in order to take subjectivity out of the process. The TMC felt neither football nor boys hockey followed that process.

For girls hockey, the TMC voted 15-0-1 to approve the two-division proposal as well as the recommended alignments.

The TMC will meet in July to review proposals from other sports, as well as revisit football and boys ice hockey.
