The MIAA Board of Directors voted 14-3 on Wednesday to send the statewide tournament proposal to a special assembly.
The assembly will take place on Feb. 28 at 10 a.m. Every member school of the MIAA will have one vote that will determine the outcome of the Tournament Management Committee’s statewide tournament proposal.
The location of the assembly has not been determined. A simple majority of the 380 member schools will pass the statewide tournament proposal. If it passes, the new postseason format will go into effect beginning with the 2021-2022 school year.
The Tournament Management Committee (TMC) unveiled the basic concepts of the statewide tournament format last week. Many details still need to be worked out, like official divisional alignments.
The TMC’s proposal eliminates sectional tournaments and moves the seeding process to MaxPreps. The new format would create more divisions across the state in order to better align schools based on enrollment and create equal paths to championships.
