NORTHAMPTON – For over a decade, MANNA Soup Kitchen has provided a sense of community and a hot meal on Thanksgiving Day.

This year the soup kitchen celebrates its 11th year of serving a community dinner at Edwards Church, from noon to 2 p.m., on Nov. 22 that is open to all. Additionally, MANNA is taking orders for a home delivery meal until Nov. 20 for those living in Northampton, Florence, Leeds, Easthampton, Westhampton and Hatfield.

“A lot of people in our community don't have a place to go for a Thanksgiving meal,” Carl Erickson, president of the MANNA Board of Directors, said. “It’s been happening for so many years, it’s become a well-known and well-liked tradition.”

MANNA is preparing to serve 200 meals on Thanksgiving, Erickson said, with the help of 95 volunteers. Within a few days of putting out a call for volunteers, MANNA was able to fill every slot available. The soup kitchen expects to deliver 200 meals on Thanksgiving and another 100 take out meals.

“It was amazing,” Erickson said. Volunteers will help with prepping food in the kitchen, setting up the dinning hall, serving the buffet-style dinner, and delivering the home meals, which run from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thanksgiving.

“(Home deliveries) have worked out well and it’s become popular,” Erickson said. “It’s easy to get volunteers to deliver meals, it’s a good feeling thing to do.”

The Thanksgiving Dinner will include all the traditional fixtures – turkey (25 of them baked at the University of Massachusetts Amherst), stuffing, a variety of vegetables, donated pies from the Florence Pie Bar and the Montessori School of Northampton, cider, coffee, and eggnog.

“It’s about as complete a Thanksgiving Dinner as you can find,” Erickson said.

To place an order for a home delivered meal, call (413) 695-3514, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday through Saturday. Leave a message with your name, street address, city or town, number of meals and a phone number to call back. Last day to sign up is Nov. 20.
