AMHERST — A Ludlow man driving a vehicle with its passenger-side front tire blown out was arrested in Hadley after a brief low-speed pursuit early Monday morning, according to Amherst Police.

Xavier M. Ryer, 21, was arrested at 1:43 a.m. near the intersection of Russell and Whalley streets in Hadley on charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle to endanger, failure to stop for police, failure to stay within marked lanes, unsafe operation of a motor vehicle, improper operation of a motor vehicle and failure to stop/ yield, police said.

Ryer’s vehicle was first observed on College Street traveling west in the eastbound lane, with the flat tire and an odor of smoke coming from it, according to police.

After pulling his vehicle over along Route 9 near the Hadley malls, Ryer’s vehicle continued traveling at the speed limit toward the Coolidge Bridge, where Hadley Police placed spikes in the road to put an end to the pursuit. Instead, Ryer turned onto Whalley Street next to the Hadley Juvenile Court and was taken into custody.

K9 Marvin was used to search Ryer’s vehicle and the location near the malls where Ryer had stopped during the pursuit.
