■David B. Musante Jr. of Northampton was the victor yesterday in the three-way Democratic battle for Hampshire County Commissioner, as he defeated attorney Janet R. Dugan of Amherst by 237 votes, with David P. Sullivan running third.

■Airman Michael F. Karparis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Karparis Sr., of State Street, has graduated at Sheppard AFB, Texas, from the technical training course for U.S. Air Force corrosion control specialists. A 1967 graduate of Northampton High School, the airman attended Smith’s Vocational School and Springfield Technical Community College.

■The Valley’s National Public Radio affiliate, WFCR-FM, has hired a new general manager, filling a slot that has lacked a permanent employee since former general manager Joan Rubel left the station in 1994. Martin Miller, program director of WGBH radio in Boston since 1991, will start at WFCR on Oct. 21, replacing the acting general manager, Kevin Aiken.

■The city of Holyoke celebrates a welcome milestone today. For the first time in a decade the city has gone a year without a murder. But Police Chief Russell Paquette says crime and violence still are all too present in the Connecticut River mill city of 49,000 people.
