■Mayor Sean Dunphy made a tour of recreation areas in the city yesterday and made a point of checking on damage to the Williams Street School where six windows have been broken this year, the most broken at the school in recent memory. Recreation Department Supervisor General Patrick Goggins led the mayor on the tour.

■Miss Marie Lococo of High Street in Florence has just returned from a seven-week tour of France, with a group of fellow pupils at Our Lady of the Elms College in Chicopee. Two French professors, Sister Mary and Sister Eleanor Dooley, arranged the tip and were their guides.

25 Years Ago

■Rent increases in the past year in a number of area housing complexes have outpaced the rate of inflation, according to a University of Massachusetts study. The study says rent increases ranged as high as 19 percent in one Amherst complex, Puffton Village, while other area rental units saw jumps of between 6 percent and 12 percent, compared to the national inflation rate of 3 percent.

■Easthampton Town Planner Stuart Beckley was named acting town administrator yesterday, in the absence of Town Administrator John Chmura, who has been hospitalized. Chmura, who is diabetic and has been waiting for a kidney transplant, is reportedly in an area hospital.

■Newsweek Magazine has named Northampton High School as one of the best public high schools in the country, largely based on the high number of students there taking Advanced Placement exams. Hamp High was ranked 609 out of the 1,734 schools that made the list.

■Belchertown officials are hopeful a Pennsylvania firm will develop a portion of the former Belchertown State School into a desirable location for retailers, assisted living units, office space, housing and medical facilities. The company, Weston Solutions Inc., specializes in rehabilitating and developing sites like the former state school.
