■The Northampton Telephone Company held an open house at their new headquarters recently. Mrs. Lilian Grosvenor Jones, granddaughter of Alexander Graham Bell, spoke into a phone which was programmed to an oscilloscope that shows the voice pattern of an individual. This piece of equipment is used by the telephone company to test toll circuits.

■Rate increases at Cooley Dickinson Hospital for private and semi-private rooms have been announced by William T. Lees Jr., administrative head. The rate for semi-private rooms in the hospital’s west wing will range from $48 to $51, the greatest increase being a sum of $5.50 a day.

■Volunteers for an organization called Food Not Bombs served up a free meal yesterday in Pulaski Park in Northampton. For the past six weeks, organizers have been feeding the hungry by serving leftovers and donations from restaurants.

■A Florence eatery may not reopen after a fire closed it nine days ago. Ellen Hall, who owns Sandy’s restaurant in the Pine Street mini-mall, said that the earliest the eatery could open is four weeks — and she may not be able to wait that long. “I have no income. I can’t afford to wait around,” said Hall.

■Amherst and University of Massachusetts police are gearing up for an onslaught of Phish fans expected to arrive en masse this weekend for two sold-out concerts at UMass. Police expect many will be toting illegal drugs, including marijuana, mushrooms and nitrous oxide.

■For the next few days and nights Marion Brown’s music will be heard on low-wattage radio stations from New York City to Okinawa, but there was a time, in the late 1980s and early ’90s, when the so-called avant-garde alto sax genius lived among us, roaming Northampton streets by day, blowing his horn in Sheehan’s basement by night. Brown died Monday in Florida at age 79, or maybe 75. His exact age was never very clear.
