■Sidney A. Bailey, 82, of the Beeches, husband of Mary (Starkweather) Bailey, and a prominent business and civic leader in this city for many years, died Saturday at Cooley Dickinson Hospital. In 1920 he was a member of the notification committee that advised Calvin Coolidge of his nomination as vice president of the United States.

■Agnes Valenta of 184 Federal St. and Kenneth G. Sullivan of 25 Washington Place were named to the Recreation Commission by Mayor Sean M. Dunphy at Thursday night’s City Council session. The council approved the appointments of Miss Valenta to one of the new at-large positions and Sullivan to represent Ward 2.

■Mayor Mary L. Ford expects to appoint a seven-member Downtown Historic District Study Committee during tonight’s City Council meeting. The study committee will investigate and report on the significance of buildings, structures and sites to be included in a proposed new historic district.

■A support group run by and for women veterans that will begin meeting tonight is a way for female veterans to share experiences and discuss issues. The group was started by Phyllis Larimore, a U.S. Army veteran who works as a researcher in a substance abuse rehabilitation program at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Leeds.
