50 Years Ago

■Four members of the class of 1949 at Northampton High School are now serving on the Northampton City Council. The four classmates are: William C. Ames, Robert R. Patenaude, Edward P Gross, and Vincent J. LoBello.

■Albert C. Hills, a native of Northampton, was elected assistant treasurer of The Connecticut Bank and Trust Co. He is manager of the bank’s proof department. Hills and his wife, the former Edith Bliss of Northampton, and their three children live in Simsbury, Conn.

25 Years Ago

■The Caldor discount store chain filed for protection from its creditors today under Chapter 11 of the federal bankruptcy laws. The Caldor store on North King Street in Northampton, however, was open for business today as usual.

■People involved with the Hampshire County chapter of the American Red Cross celebrated its 80th birthday yesterday, looking both at its past and future. The years since Sept. 17, 1915 — the day the chapter was founded in the Academy of Music to support World War I — were remembered.
