■The Lower Leeds Reservoir is a popular spot these days, whether your goal is cooling your feet, practicing the dog paddle, playing beach ball, boat sailing, or simply reflecting on life’s problems.

■Northampton and Amherst in Franklin County? Easthampton in Hampden County? Fitchburg the county seat of Hampshire County? That’s part of the proposed restructuring of counties in the state aimed at providing better services and government.

■The Charles A. Bisbee Funeral Home in Chesterfield will close next month, ending a century-long association the Bisbee family has had with the funeral business. Charles A. Bisbee Jr. said his business has been sold to longtime associate Kenneth Pease, owner of Funeral Services Inc., who will continue to operate out of his Northampton and Westfield locations.

■Northampton’s public beach in Leeds was ordered closed indefinitely today, as officials test waters there for a parasite that causes a gastrointestinal disorder. The testing for the giardia lamblia parasite, also known as “beaver fever,” was prompted after five city residents and one Westhampton resident were confirmed to have the parasite.

■An anemic economy may have slowed momentum at Village Hill Northampton, but efforts to develop the former state hospital grounds into a mix of homes and businesses is picking up steam this summer. On the north campus, where most of the homes are being constructed, Wright Builders Inc. reports that interest in its high-end subdivision has revved back up this year.

■Thanks to ground-breaking legislation signed into law this summer, public schools in Massachusetts will be ranked not only on how they perform on standardized tests but also on whether their respective curricula encourage students to think outside the box. “Employers are increasingly saying that they don’t just need people with basic job skills, but people who are creative,” said state Sen. Stanley C. Rosenberg.
